About Us
The Cumbrian Goat Experience is a truly remarkable Holiday Adventure. Set nestling in a superb position, at the foot of England’s highest mountain (Scafell), and on the edge of the deepest lake (Wastwater), in the heart of the Wasdale Valley, the peaceful part of the Lake District National Park is Woodhow Farm and Cottages, forming part of a working Lakeland Farm with a unique twist. The principle animal on our unique farm is the Goat! We have over 100 South African Boer Goats this being a meat herd and also a smaller herd of British Saanan Goats used in our dairy side to the farm.- (see our Butchery page for more details about Goat Meat and Goat Products page on the dairy). We also have a flock of over 500 Herdwick Sheep a traditional site for any Lakeland Farm which have been bread to a high standard and kept in line by our experienced Shepherd Tom
The new addition to the farm are our Rare Breed Tamworth Pigs, a naturally reared pig supplying mouth watering, succulent pork and bacon a pure Rare Breed Meat- (see our Butchery page for more details about Goat Meat, Lamb and Mutton and our Suculant Pork also on the Goat Products page is information on our dairy herd).
The Farm has existed since 1757 and has changed over the centuries. However, many original features remain, from the original water pump to the barns that form the heart of the Farm.
The whole farm is entered into the Environmental Stewardship Scheme run by DEFRA, and we are proud to do our part for the Environment. By conserving the wildlife (biodiversity) and by maintaining and enhancing the landscapes we can add quality and character, providing an outstanding environment for the breeding and raising of Goats.
A large increase in bird-life has resulted from the on-going provision of special habitats for ground-nesting birds in our Woodlands and our Tarn.
The Cumbrian-Goat-Experience and the Farm are aiming to be Green and Organic over time, allowing us to encourage Farm Educational Visits and Work Experience under this scheme, and providing courses that promote the Environment and the way of life at the Cumbrian-Goat-Experience
The Cumbrian Goat Experience
The Cumbrian Goat Experience consists of 158 acres of unspoilt awe-inspiring Lakeland pasture. With rocky outcrops and ancient broadleaved woodlands all surrounding the Farm, and footpaths crisscrossing our land leading to hundreds of walks right outside your door, Woodhow Farm offers you everything a holiday in the Lake District is all about.
Some of our Broadleaved Woodland is very old and species rich. Wild flowers flourish alongside a vast array of other wildlife, including badgers and foxes, to buzzards and ravens. Deer have also been known to cross our path!
Woodhow Farm boasts its own Tarn that is home to a vast array of Birds, Waterfowl and Insects, and the resident Herron can often be seen nestling at the waters edge.
Wastwater itself is only a short stroll away, and boasts some of the best diving in the lakes. And with Wasdale been the birthplace of British climbing, a variety of climbs of all grades can be had (see our Wasdale area page for more information).
